Underlining / Highlighting

Underlining/highlighting is a strategy to help you organize information. The real secret is to be selective as you do this.

• Helps you organize information.
• Helps you select and see important points.
• Helps you understand the author's craft.

1. Read through the selection first.
2. Reread and begin underlining.
3. Do not underline whole sentences.
4. Choose key ideas from the sentences.
5. Note main ideas with numbers or other types of notations.
6. Come up with topics for main ideas and write them in margins.
