Two Column Note-Taking

Two column note-taking is a strategy that you might use to organize information and take constructive notes (as you read, as you listen to a lecture, as you construct an opinion and as you study). The columns themselves can take a variety of forms, depending on the subject area and the particular instructional assignment.

• Enables you to see relationships between ideas and make connections as you take notes.
• Enable you to take notes that are coherent and east to study for future learning.
• Helps you organize and remember information.
• Provides a great tool for studying for tests.

1. Put the topic at the top.
2. Divide your paper into two columns-one-third on the left and the remaining two-thirds on the right.
3. Write "Main Idea" at the top of the left column.
4. Write "Details" at the top of the right column.
5. As you read or listen, list the main points as questions or key words.
6. Record details to support that key point in the right column.
