S. Q. 3R.

Template

The letters SQ3R stand for a five step study-reading strategy used by successful readers, "survey-question-read-recite-recall."

Reasons for Use

Step by Step Procedure

  1. S: Survey: Preview the selection you are to read. Ask yourself questions as you preview the material and think about the title of the chapter, headings, subheadings, and introductory and concluding paragraphs. These questions should relate to what the chapter is about and what information the author is telling you about the subject.
  2. Q: Question: Turn each heading into a question. Draw a line down on paper about one-third of the way over. Write questions in the left column. (Avoid questions that can be answered "yes" or "no".) Begin the questions with words such as "Who," "What," "Where," "How," or "List" or "Name".
  3. RI: Read: Read the information under the first heading to find answers to your questions. You may need to ask more questions. Other questions may need to be revised. As you find the answers, write them in the right hand column of your paper.
  4. R2: Recite: After covering the material you just read, ask yourself each question. Say or write the answers. Then reread the information related to any question you were unable to answer.
  5. R3: Review: Go over your notes. Try to recall the main points of the chapter. Reread the main headings while trying to think of details that were important. Remember, more reviewing helps you remember longer.
