Reciprocal Teaching

Reciprocal teaching is a strategy that will help you learn the material and improve your thinking skills. You will use four different techniques: summarizing, questioning, clarifying and predicting as you read your textbooks or other reading and then teach what you have learned to others.

• Improve critical thinking.
• Helps you to increase comprehension.
• Helps you retain content

1. Read a paragraph or section. Summarize the gist of the material. Use notes if you want. (Graphic organizers and sticky notes are possiblilites.)
2. Generate questions about the content. Show you understand the important information. Ask another students to answer.
3. Clarify any vocabulary or unclear statements. Ask another student to help clarify or to add statements that are unclear.
4. Predict what will be in the next paragraph or upcoming section.
5. Continue through the reading working with another student.
